British Columbia declared a state of emergency Saturday after the Bald Range wildfire forced more than 20,000 people to evacuate communities along Okanagan Lake, including roughly 12,000 in Summerland and about 8,000 in and around Peachland. The fire, burning out of control west of Okanagan Lake, expanded rapidly to about 9,500 hectares after nearly doubling overnight and destroyed homes. Provincial officials reported 102 wildfires across B.C., nearly half classified as out of control. Canada’s federal government said it would provide urgent assistance to B.C.
