British Columbia Wildfire Forces Evacuations

British Columbia declared a state of emergency as the Bald Range wildfire forced more than 20,000 people to evacuate communities along Okanagan Lake in western Canada. The evacuation orders covered all of Summerland, about 12,000 residents, and about 8,000 people in and around nearby Peachland. The fire, first detected on Friday, doubled in size to more than 36 square miles (95 square kilometers) across the Summerland and Okanagan-Similkameen districts. Homes were destroyed, and more than 100 wildfires were burning provincewide, nearly half out of control.
