The reporting
Sen. Darline Graham and Rep. Ralph Norman advanced to an Aug. 25 runoff in South Carolina’s special Republican Senate primary after no candidate won the required majority to succeed the late Sen. Lindsey Graham on the November ballot. Graham, appointed by Gov. Henry McMaster after her brother’s death and endorsed by President Donald Trump, led with 32.6% with about 83% counted. Norman had 24.1%, ahead of Rep. Russell Fry and former Gov. Mark Sanford. The runoff winner will face Democrat Annie Andrews in November.
Analysis & opinion
Nepotistic SuccessionMostly Left
Darline Graham’s rise is a product of political nepotism rather than a purely earned mandate. Her connection to her late brother and powerful allies gave her an unfair path to the Senate seat, even if she denies that it was handed to her.
