The reporting
The FBI’s 2025 Uniform Crime Report, released Friday, estimated U.S. violent crime fell 9.3% from 2024, the largest one-year decline recorded, while murder dropped 18.1%. The murder rate fell to 4.1 per 100,000 residents, the lowest since 1956, and total violent crime declined to roughly 1.1 million incidents. The FBI said the report includes data from about 87% of police departments, so some jurisdictions are not represented. President Donald Trump touted the figures before police officers in Nassau County, New York, tying the decline to his administration’s national crime crackdown.
