The reporting
President Donald Trump announced on Truth Social that Ed Martin is leaving the Justice Department, where he served as U.S. pardon attorney and director of the Weaponization Working Group, to handle outside legal work for the upcoming midterm elections and the 2028 presidential race. Martin previously served from January to May 2025 as interim U.S. attorney for the District of Columbia before moving into his DOJ roles. Trump said Martin would work on election-related legal battles aimed at ensuring “Free, Fair, and Honest Elections.”
Analysis & opinion
Politicized prosecutionsMostly Left
The Justice Department under Trump was using federal law enforcement for political ends. Martin’s role and departure fit into a broader effort to target the president’s critics through prosecutions.
Trump loyalistMostly Left
Ed Martin was a Trump loyalist whose suitability for a Justice Department role was deeply questionable. His associations and conduct made his tenure controversial rather than credible.
