The reporting
Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy rejected wartime elections in comments released Aug. 23, saying a vote during Russia’s invasion would risk splitting Ukraine and could destroy the country. Elections have been suspended under martial law since Russia’s 2022 invasion, and Zelenskyy’s five-year term ended in 2024. The call for a vote came from dismissed Defense Minister Mykhailo Fedorov, whose involvement in protests and election demands Zelenskyy called misguided. Zelenskyy also said Russia likely plans to mobilize 300,000 more troops after mid-September parliamentary elections.
