Trump Renames Lake Ontario

Trump signed an executive order Thursday directing the Interior Department and U.S. Board on Geographic Names to rename Lake Ontario “Lake America” in federal systems amid a trade dispute with Canada. Canadian Prime Minister Mark Carney rejected the change, saying the name is more than 400 years old and predates both Canadian Confederation and U.S. independence. Seneca Nation President J. Conrad Seneca urged reversal, citing a more than 225-year-old treaty and the name’s Indigenous origins. Rep. Debbie Dingell plans legislation to block the order, and some Republican officials in northern states also opposed it.
