Several senior U.S. military leaders warned Defense Secretary Pete Hegseth in a classified Aug. 14 assessment that extending operations against Iran is unsustainable and could weaken U.S. homeland defense and other theaters. The objections came from the Army, Navy and Air Force chiefs and four-star commanders overseeing Europe, Asia and Latin America, as the Pentagon weighs longer deployments for more than 50,000 troops in the Middle East. Chief Pentagon spokesman Sean Parnell called the leak a crime, and the Pentagon disputed the characterization of the warnings.
