The reporting
Transportation Secretary Sean Duffy announced Monday that the Federal Motor Carrier Safety Administration is removing 110 commercial driver training providers from its registry, immediately barring them from training CDL applicants, after linking them to more than 5,000 drivers who failed English-proficiency tests. The department said another 160 schools were ordered to suspend operations over training-site or compliance problems, bringing the total affected to 270. Duffy, Homeland Security Secretary Markwayne Mullin and Justice Department officials also announced a nationwide audit of third-party CDL skills testers and state oversight of testers.
Analysis & opinion
Fraudulent LicensingLeans Right
Illegitimate or poorly regulated commercial-driving schools let unqualified immigrants obtain trucking credentials they should not have received. Shutting down those schools and closing licensing loopholes is necessary to protect road safety.
Biden-Era NegligenceLeans Right
Biden administration policies and lax oversight made the truck-licensing system dangerously easy for migrant drivers to exploit. Trucking companies, schools, and federal officials bear blame for allowing unsafe or ineligible drivers to be certified and hired.
