Mark Carney Liberals Sweep Byelections

Prime Minister Mark Carney’s Liberals won all three Aug. 31 federal byelections, restoring the government’s majority after MP resignations had briefly reduced it. The party carried Chicoutimi-Le Fjord in Quebec, Beaches-East York in Toronto and North Vancouver-Capilano in British Columbia, topping 50% in each. In Chicoutimi-Le Fjord, Liberal Daniel Gobeil won 51.3%, flipping a Conservative seat as Bloc Québécois candidate Caroline Dubé took 32.9% and Conservative Régis Gaudreault 12.5%. Carney said Sept. 1 the results showed support for his government’s plan amid trade tensions with the United States.
