Trump Greenland Deal Draws Optimism

The United States, Denmark and Greenland announced a security agreement that would expand the U.S. military presence in Greenland while leaving the island under Danish sovereignty. The deal follows months in which President Trump threatened to take control of Greenland, then quiet talks among U.S., Danish and Greenlandic officials. It builds on a 1951 defense treaty that already gives the U.S. broad access, including Pituffik Space Base. Trump said the pact gives Washington “permanent control over security” and blocks adversaries from bases and sensitive investments. Danish and Greenlandic leaders said sovereignty remains intact. The pact is expected to be signed next week, then needs parliamentary approval.
