Trump Rejects Iran Ceasefire

What happened

President Donald Trump rejected Iran’s ceasefire proposal, and Iran says it is ready for war to resume but still open to diplomacy. Talks continue indirectly through mediators, though no formal U.S. response has reached Tehran. Tehran has offered to reopen the Strait of Hormuz within about seven days and resume nuclear talks if Washington first lifts its naval blockade, eases oil sanctions and releases frozen assets. The strait carries roughly a fifth of the world’s oil supply, making it a central pressure point in the conflict. Washington says Iran violated earlier understandings, while Tehran says the United States broke the prior deal first. Iran’s Revolutionary Guard claimed it seized an American underwater drone. Qatar is still trying to keep talks alive this week.

Left-leaning accounts cast Trump’s refusal as prolonging a dangerous standoff over Hormuz rather than closing a path away from war. Al Jazeera stressed fears that U.S.-Iran fighting could resume as the crisis remains unresolved. Truthout framed Tehran’s offer as a push for a negotiated end, with Trump positioned as the barrier. Al Jazeera also read Trump’s stance as a bid for a better deal through sanctions pressure.

Right-leaning accounts led with Iran’s threats and demands, treating diplomacy as mixed with pressure on Washington. The New York Post emphasized Iran’s warning posture, including readiness for a “doomsday war,” while noting its peace message. The New York Post cited Trump’s view that the proposal was not acceptable and that Iran could not be trusted. The Washington Times focused on the up-front U.S. concessions Iran sought before reopening Hormuz.
