What happened

A new NBC News/Telemundo poll found Latino voters favored Democrats over Republicans for control of Congress, with more than half backing Democrats. The same poll found more than two-thirds of Latino voters disapproved of President Donald Trump’s performance. The shift follows Trump’s significant gains with Latino voters in 2024, which helped return him to office. Latino voters ranked the cost of living as their top concern, and the poll found they favored Democrats over Trump on the economy by a wide margin. Trump brushed off questions about his polling, saying, “I’m doing great,” and blaming CNN and the media. Two-thirds said his immigration enforcement had gone too far. The November midterms will decide control of Congress.

How each side covered it

From the left

Left-leaning outlets framed the poll as evidence that Trump’s 2024 Latino gains may not be durable, with economic pain and immigration enforcement driving the backlash. The New York Times emphasized that Latino voters who shifted toward Republicans now view the party more negatively than in recent years. The Guardian tied the reversal to Republican midterm risk and voters souring on Trump’s agenda.
