What happened

Texas Gov. Greg Abbott said he would not attend President Donald Trump’s campaign rally in San Antonio for Republican Senate candidate Ken Paxton. Trump was returning to Texas for his third visit in about a month to campaign for Republicans. Abbott is seeking a fourth term as governor, while Democrat Gina Hinojosa has made that race competitive in a state Republicans long viewed as safely red. Paxton is running against Democrat James Talarico for a U.S. Senate seat, with polling cited in coverage showing Talarico ahead. Abbott said he had other campaign events scheduled. He said Trump’s visits excite and organize Republican voters. The rally was set for Wednesday at Freeman Coliseum. Abbott’s campaign said more details on his schedule would come through media advisories.

How each side covered it

From the left

Left-leaning outlets framed Abbott’s absence as a sign of Republican strain, tying it to Trump’s weaker pull and tighter Texas races. Daily Beast cast the decision as a political snub of Trump rather than a routine conflict. TPM focused on Texas becoming genuinely competitive despite its red-state history. Daily Kos argued Trump’s unpopularity could damage Republicans more broadly.
