What happened

Ken Paxton blamed fuel costs and the Iran war for problems facing his Senate campaign in audio from a private Washington fundraiser that surfaced Tuesday. Asked what was dragging his campaign, Paxton said, “It’s the war, it’s gas prices, it’s diesel,” and linked fuel costs to higher food prices. The recording was the third leak from the September fundraiser, after earlier clips showed Paxton criticizing the GOP convention in Dallas and saying Washington was directing his campaign. Paxton faces Democrat James Talarico in a close Texas race that could affect Republicans’ 53–47 Senate majority. A Paxton spokesperson called the recording a “non-story.” Trump was scheduled to campaign with Paxton in San Antonio that day.

How each side covered it

From the left

Left-leaning outlets framed Paxton’s remarks as a sign that Trump’s foreign policy and price pressures were hurting a Republican nominee. HuffPost centered Paxton’s own blame for the war and fuel prices as a drag on his bid. MS NOW emphasized Trump’s personal stake in protecting his kingmaker image. Daily Kos focused on donor hostility leaking damaging audio.

From the right

Right-leaning outlets treated the leak as a campaign problem for Paxton, while stressing the race’s importance to Senate control. The New York Post emphasized fuel costs and affordability pressures as a political liability. Daily Mail leaned into the latest leaked tape hitting before Paxton appeared with Trump. Townhall framed Trump’s visit as part of keeping the Senate Republican.
