What happened

President Donald Trump drew backlash after saying at a Grand Island, Nebraska, campaign rally that Iran could “take out a city,” then adding, “Let them take out Los Angeles. Let them take out San Diego.” He was defending the Iran war’s cost, arguing higher prices were a small price to keep the United States and world safe. Trump said the war would end soon and that it prevented Iran from posing a larger threat, including with a nuclear weapon. California officials and critics said his words treated residents as expendable, while White House Communications Director Steven Cheung said Trump meant the war stopped a nuclear Iran from threatening U.S. cities. Newsom ordered state threat monitoring. Bass said she knew of no active threat.

How each side covered it

From the left

Left-leaning outlets framed the remarks chiefly as a safety breach by a president, with partisan targeting and war costs as supporting themes. CNN centered Karen Bass’s charge that a president should protect Americans, not encourage attacks on them. The Guardian linked the named cities to Trump’s hostility toward liberal California. HuffPost stressed that the wording was unclear while tying it to pressure over fuel prices.

From the right

Right-leaning outlets led with the backlash from California officials, while giving more space to Trump’s argument that the war kept Americans safe. The New York Post described officials as reading the comments as permission for Iran to destroy the cities, while also presenting Trump’s case that higher gas prices were a “small price to pay” against a nuclear threat. It treated the line as an apparent joke that triggered Democratic anger.
