What happened

Federal authorities arrested 18-year-old Sheikhdoon Abdullahi Mohamud and charged him with receiving a firearm and ammunition while allegedly knowing they would support a federal terrorism crime, including support for ISIS. The complaint says Mohamud planned to attack the Mall of America during a Hmong arts celebration and hoped to kill as many as 30 people. The FBI had investigated him since December 2024 through messages with a confidential source. After travel abroad faltered, he allegedly shifted from plans to fight in Somalia to an attack in Minnesota. U.S. Attorney Daniel Rosen said the FBI disrupted the plot. Mohamud made an initial court appearance, and the case is pending.

How each side covered it

From the left

Left-leaning outlets led with a disrupted ISIS-linked mass-casualty threat, while also stressing the sting and alleged hate motive. CNN centered officials’ account that the suspect was stopped before carrying out an attack tied to ISIS. The New York Times cited the complaint’s claim that the mall was chosen because of Jewish ownership. The Guardian emphasized that the FBI supplied the weapon in the sting.

From the right

Right-leaning outlets framed the case as proof that counterterrorism vigilance remains necessary, with sharper focus on extremist ideology and local politics. Fox News leaned on the FBI’s announcement of a thwarted Mall of America terror plot involving a suspected ISIS sympathizer. The Gateway Pundit tied the case to Somali-linked extremism in Minnesota and criticism of state leadership. The New York Post cited authorities and the affidavit to stress an antisemitic purpose.
