What happened

Federal agents arrested Sheikhdoon Abdullahi Mohamud after an undercover sale of a rifle and ammunition, saying they disrupted his alleged Mall of America attack plan. Federal authorities charged the 18-year-old Twin Cities U.S. citizen with offenses tied to the gun and alleged terror plot; he is presumed innocent unless proven guilty. Prosecutors and the FBI say an informant began messaging Mohamud in December 2024, when he discussed joining militant groups in Somalia before allegedly turning to Minnesota. Authorities say he targeted non-Muslims during a Hmong arts celebration and discussed killing more than 30 people. U.S. Attorney Daniel Rosen said agents stopped the threat. The case is proceeding in federal court.
