What happened

Gillio Lopes, one of seven men named in a civil lawsuit over an alleged 2024 sexual assault at Cornell, asked a court to remove New York Attorney General Letitia James as special prosecutor in the related criminal investigation. The civil case was filed by a woman identified as Jane Doe, who says the men assaulted her at a fraternity house; the defendants deny the allegations, and none has been criminally charged. Gov. Kathy Hochul appointed James after saying she had lost confidence in Cornell University Police and the Tompkins County district attorney. Lopes’s lawyer said James’s September 28 post showed bias. James’s office said it was following the facts and law. No ruling is reported.

How each side covered it

From the left

Only one left-leaning outlet we track covered this: MS NOW, under the headline “One of the Cornell students accused of gang rape wants AG James off the case”.

From the right

Right-leaning outlets framed the filing as a challenge to James’s judgment and political credibility, not just a procedural fight. RedState argued that James’s public comments showed prejudgment and made her appointment vulnerable, calling her an “ethically challenged political operator”. Townhall said blaming Trump for inaction shifted responsibility away from Democrats who controlled institutions at the time.
