What happened

An ICE officer shot 28-year-old Oscar Belgal during an attempted arrest in Marble Hill. Belgal was hit in the neck while in a vehicle with a 5-year-old child, who was unharmed and later found with a family member. Homeland Security said Belgal was an undocumented Dominican national sought over a grand larceny conviction, prior arrests and alleged Trinitarios gang ties. Federal officials said Belgal drove toward officers, while city officials said surveillance showed plainclothes agents approaching as he backed into a parking spot. Mayor Zohran Mamdani and Gov. Kathy Hochul condemned the shooting, and protests followed. The FBI and DHS are investigating; body-camera footage has not been released.

How each side covered it

From the left

Left-leaning outlets framed the shooting as a danger to a child and neighborhood, tying it to demands to curb ICE raids. The Guardian emphasized calls for limits on ICE force and questions about transparency after officials cast Belgal as dangerous. The Los Angeles Times kept the federal self-defense claim in view, citing officials who said agents feared for their lives.

From the right

Right-leaning outlets framed the shooting around immigration enforcement against a dangerous migrant, with blame placed on city sanctuary policies and anti-ICE politics. The New York Post leaned into the federal self-defense account, Mamdani’s response, and the protest clashes that followed near the hospital.
