What happened

New York Democrats clashed with the Department of Homeland Security after federal ICE agents shot and wounded 28-year-old Oscar Belgal during an immigration operation in the Bronx while he was in a moving vehicle with his five-year-old son. DHS said Belgal was in the country illegally, had a criminal record including robbery, assault and drug-related offenses, had evaded ICE before, and was associated with the Trinitarios gang. DHS said Belgal accelerated toward officers; New York City Mayor Zohran Mamdani said shooting at a moving vehicle was unacceptable. Mamdani called for ICE to leave New York. DHS had not released video of the shooting itself.

How each side covered it

From the left

Left-leaning outlets framed the clash as a warning about aggressive immigration enforcement and local cooperation that weakened sanctuary protections. In The Guardian, Darializa Avila Chevalier said local police conduct violated the spirit, if not the letter, of New York’s sanctuary laws. HuffPost emphasized Mamdani’s charge that ICE treated lawful policing standards as optional amid armed, sometimes masked operations. The Daily Beast focused on Mullin’s argument that deadly ICE encounters were necessary sacrifices for faster apprehension.

From the right

Right-leaning outlets framed the confrontation around public safety, faulting critics for blaming ICE instead of the suspect and warning that sanctuary policies put Americans at risk. The Gateway Pundit put responsibility for the confrontation on the suspect rather than the agents pursuing him. The New York Post, quoting Markwayne Mullin and Zohran Mamdani, highlighted claims that sanctuary leaders were hypocritically attacking ICE while Mamdani demanded the suspect’s release and ICE’s departure from New York.
