What happened

Ken Paxton told donors in privately recorded remarks that fellow Republican John Cornyn was not helping his Texas Senate campaign and wanted him to lose. CNN said it obtained the September 24 Washington fundraiser audio from an attendee who opposes Paxton. Paxton has publicly welcomed Cornyn’s support, but Cornyn has not endorsed him after losing to Paxton in the Republican primary runoff. Paxton faces Democratic state Rep. James Talarico in a close race, with national Republicans spending more than $100 million to help defend a seat in a state Democrats have not won statewide since 1994. Cornyn’s representative said Cornyn supports the Republican ticket. The race outcome and any Cornyn support remain uncertain.

How each side covered it

From the left

Left-leaning outlets framed the audio as proof that Republican tensions still shadow Paxton’s public calls for unity. CNN stressed the gap between Paxton’s softer public posture and private frustration, with Senate control tied to the Texas race. HuffPost lingered on the leak pattern, casting the recording as another internal exposure creating trouble for Paxton.

From the right

Right-leaning outlets treated the episode as an extension of a bitter Republican primary fight, centered on Cornyn’s distance from Paxton. Daily Mail emphasized Paxton’s accusation that Cornyn wanted him defeated in a high-stakes race. Townhall highlighted the revenge angle, portraying Cornyn as trying to punish Republicans for their primary choice.
