What happened

James Talarico returned to in-person campaigning at Austin City Limits Music Festival, where the Texas Democratic Senate nominee greeted voters and posed for photos. He is challenging Republican Ken Paxton in a close Texas Senate race after having no in-person Texas campaign appearance since Sept. 26. Talarico’s campaign said he had a severe flu and was recovering at home. Paxton and President Donald Trump questioned his whereabouts, while Paxton demanded “proof of life” and criticized New York fundraising during the absence. Talarico’s campaign said a Sept. 30 virtual event made the gap closer to nine days. Talarico said he planned more weekend campaign stops, including Dallas.

From the right

Right-leaning outlets framed the return around doubts about Talarico’s absence, rather than treating the flu explanation as settled. ZeroHedge cited Paxton’s campaign and conservative commentators saying the timeline did not account for the length of the absence. Fox News emphasized that Talarico’s return ended days of speculation and criticism. The Gateway Pundit cast him as neglecting Texas voters while appearing elsewhere.
