What happened

A federal judge ordered the Trump administration to stop airing challenged taxpayer-funded ads and cancel remaining placements, including ads set for Sunday night. The temporary order blocks the administration for two weeks from using Department of Homeland Security funds or signing new agreements to develop or air the ads. The administration had used DHS funds, including money routed through U.S. Customs and Border Protection, for a campaign budgeted at about $20 million. The ads began in late September, featured President Donald Trump favorably and ran before the November midterm elections. The administration called them border-security public-service messages and said the buys were ending Sunday. Common Cause and other plaintiffs called them unlawful political propaganda. The underlying lawsuit remains pending.

How each side covered it

Left-leaning outlets framed the ruling as a check on taxpayer-funded promotion of Trump, focusing on alleged misuse of public money. HuffPost stressed that ads “glorifying” Trump drew backlash, while noting the administration said the campaign was already ending. MS NOW highlighted the watchdog coalition’s victory, citing challengers who called the ads an illegal misuse of funds.
