What happened

Republican Sen. Roger Marshall paid a Hutchinson bakery after his 2020 campaign left about $679 unpaid for a primary-election watch party. He posted proof of a $1,300 payment, and owner Holly Thomas said she could mark the invoice paid. Thomas said she spent nearly a year trying to collect while her new business struggled during the pandemic. The dispute surfaced as Marshall faces Democrat Adam Hamilton in a competitive reelection race. It drew added attention because reports said Marshall had sued more than 700 patients over medical debts. Marshall said he did not know how the bill went unpaid, that his team tried to apologize, and that he repaid it double. Thomas said the experience cost him her vote.

How each side covered it

From the left

Left-leaning outlets framed the unpaid bill as a character and campaign problem, not a quirky local dispute. The New York Times emphasized that Marshall’s opponent had seized on the saga as it drew fresh attention. CNN centered Thomas’s statement that the issue was about honoring commitments to a small business. Raw Story linked the episode to hypocrisy claims over Marshall’s pursuit of patients’ debts.
