What happened

Ken Paxton was captured on audio from a private Washington fundraiser saying Texas Republicans faced trouble in key races. The Republican Senate nominee said Gov. Greg Abbott was struggling against Democrat Gina Hinojosa, despite Abbott’s money and name recognition, and said Republicans would probably lose some legislative seats. The recording, obtained by Rolling Stone, came from an attendee who opposed Paxton and followed earlier leaks from the same event. The Senate race against Democrat James Talarico is close, with more than $500 million in advertising. Paxton blamed his own problems on limited fundraising time, primary attacks and Talarico’s profile. His campaign called the audio a partisan hit job.

How each side covered it

From the left

Left-leaning outlets framed the leak as evidence that Republican problems in Texas reached beyond one nominee. CNN emphasized growing pressure on Republicans as they tried to hold seats that looked newly competitive. Rolling Stone portrayed Paxton as a candidate privately deflecting blame for a weak campaign. Raw Story cited Sarah Longwell saying some Trump voters viewed Paxton as a “huge scumbag”.

From the right

Right-leaning outlets cast the Texas race as part of a costly and messy Senate fight, rather than only a Paxton problem. Daily Mail emphasized Republican spending as a major gamble while Democratic ads gained attention online. Washington Examiner focused on both nominees’ self-inflicted problems, saying those could hurt turnout and persuasion.
