What happened

Texas Democratic Senate candidate James Talarico returned to campaigning after nine days off the trail recovering from the flu. During his absence, right-wing posters Rhein Amacher and Nick Sortor spread a claim that he had been treated at Lindner Center of Hope, a mental-health facility near Cincinnati. Fox News published and promoted coverage faulting Talarico’s campaign for not releasing verifiable evidence sooner, while saying the hospital rumor had been debunked. Talarico is running against Republican Attorney General Ken Paxton in a close Texas Senate race. Talarico said staying home was responsible and blamed Paxton and conspiracy theorists. The clinic denied treating him, and security footage supported his account. Amacher later withdrew from an interview, citing legal concerns.

How each side covered it

From the left

Left-leaning outlets framed the episode as a right-wing smear whose promoters escaped scrutiny while Talarico was blamed. HuffPost said Fox treated a debunked rumor as a reason to fault the target, and said Trump kept reviving false claims to ridicule him. Raw Story lingered on a hoax promoter backing away amid fears of “legal hot water”.

From the right

Right-leaning outlets treated the absence as a scrutiny issue and separated that concern from the false mental-health claims. Hot Air said the campaign owed proof beyond a flu explanation, while warning falsehoods hurt the credibility of people spreading them. Fox News focused on Talarico’s border-policy shift, saying his campaign gave no example of past Biden criticism.
