What happened

Elon Musk gave $158 million in September to the Senate Leadership Fund, federal filings showed. The Republican super PAC sent matching amounts the next day to a Texas PAC supporting Republican Ken Paxton and opposing Democrat James Talarico. That money lands in a close Texas Senate race, where polls have put the candidates near even. Paxton defeated incumbent Republican Sen. John Cornyn in the primary, but his impeachment and later acquittal have fueled doubts about November. A spokesperson for Musk’s America PAC said Democratic wins could make the country “socialist, woke and borderless.” Talarico raised a record $64 million in the third quarter, largely from small donors. The Nov. 3 election could help determine Senate control.

How each side covered it

From the left

Left-leaning outlets framed Musk as the central financial force keeping Paxton competitive, stressing money over party morale. The New York Times said Musk’s gifts made him a dominant force behind Paxton and gave the campaign a lifeline in a tight race. Joe.My.God. focused on Trump blaming Cornyn and Rove while pressing Republicans to unite behind Paxton.

From the right

Right-leaning outlets framed Paxton as gaining ground with Republican voters, while treating Musk’s money as part of a wider GOP push. Breitbart News highlighted Matt Mercer’s view that Paxton’s slow growth among Republican voters put him on track to win. Just the News emphasized Trump’s claim that Cornyn and Rove were undermining Paxton.
