What happened

Shawn Oliver suspended his lieutenant governor campaign Sunday after a late-Saturday crash led to his arrest on charges including operating under the influence of liquor. Oliver said the election was too important to be overshadowed by personal matters and asked for his family’s privacy. Oliver, a New Bedford city councilor, was the Republican nominee running with gubernatorial candidate Mike Minogue against incumbent Democratic Gov. Maura Healey. The election is less than three weeks away. Minogue had called on Oliver to suspend his campaign, saying there was no excuse for driving under the influence. Police said Oliver’s vehicle overturned after striking five parked vehicles. His arraignment was scheduled for Monday.

How each side covered it

From the left

Left-leaning outlets framed Oliver’s arrest around accountability and campaign damage control for a struggling Republican Party. The Boston Globe quoted Michael Minogue pressing Oliver to take responsibility and described the arrest as another setback for a Massachusetts Republican Party struggling on Beacon Hill.

From the right

Right-leaning outlets framed the alleged drunken-driving crash as both a campaign crisis and a dangerous wreck. Fox News described turmoil hitting the Republican statewide campaign weeks before voters went to the polls. The New York Post pointed to the overturned car and multiple extensively damaged vehicles nearby.
