What happened

A Reuters/Ipsos poll found that 31% of Americans approved of President Trump’s performance, the lowest mark across his two terms. Registered voters favored Democrats over Republicans on the generic congressional ballot by a widening margin. Rising gasoline prices and dissatisfaction with the economy are weighing on Trump’s standing. The Iran war, which began after US and Israeli strikes in February, has pushed up fuel costs and household pressure. Trump said he would accept midterm results if the elections were honest. About six in ten Americans said they were confident the elections would be conducted fairly. The elections are scheduled for November 3.

How each side covered it

From the left

Left-leaning outlets framed Trump’s approval slide as a Republican liability and a Democratic opening for Congress. HuffPost emphasized that the Democratic advantage could strengthen hopes of taking both chambers. New Republic focused on Republican infighting, casting allies as preparing to blame operatives instead of Trump. Raw Story highlighted doubts that Trump would accept a Republican defeat.
