What happened

President Donald Trump called Senator Roger Marshall’s critics’ portrayal of him “some kind of a Shylock-type guy” at a campaign rally in Park City, Kansas. The term is rooted in an antisemitic stereotype about Jews and moneylending. Trump was defending Marshall after scrutiny of more than 700 lawsuits that Marshall and his medical practice filed against patients over unpaid bills. Marshall is seeking reelection against Democrat Adam Hamilton in a close Kansas Senate race. Trump said Marshall was legally required to pursue the debts and could have faced criminal liability. The New York Times and Kansas City Star say no law requires doctors to sue patients over unpaid medical debt. The election is November 3, 2026.

How each side covered it

From the left

Left-leaning outlets framed the rally as a sign of Republican strain and a return to language they viewed as antisemitic. The Guardian treated Trump’s Kansas stop as evidence that a safe Republican race had become a problem. CNN emphasized that Trump repeated the slur after earlier criticism. HuffPost focused on his false legal defense of Marshall and the rally’s disruptions.

From the right

Right-leaning outlets led with the rally’s energy and Trump’s command of the room, while still noting the slur in one account. Breitbart highlighted a packed event and strong support for Republicans. The Gateway Pundit cast hecklers as left-wing disruptors whom Trump turned into a spectacle. The Washington Examiner centered the episode on Trump’s use of the antisemitic term.
