What happened

Neil Bush, a longtime Republican and brother of former President George W. Bush, said he voted early for Democrat James Talarico against Republican Ken Paxton in the Texas Senate race. The contest is closely fought, with early voting underway before the November 3 election. Paxton was impeached by the Republican-controlled Texas House in 2023 over allegations including abuse of office, then acquitted by the Texas Senate. Bush said Paxton’s effort to challenge 2020 results in other states to help Donald Trump stay in power was central to his vote. He praised Talarico’s character and said loyalty to one person should not outrank principle. Bush’s niece Barbara Bush also donated $2,500 to a PAC backing Talarico.

How each side covered it

From the left

Left-leaning outlets framed the vote as a character test that made party loyalty secondary to Paxton’s fitness for office. HuffPost emphasized Paxton’s scandals and impeachment while treating Bush’s break as a broader rebuke of Trump-era Republican politics. It also presented Talarico as an affirmative choice, not just an anti-Paxton vehicle.

From the right

Right-leaning outlets framed the move as a Bush-family rupture with Trump-era conservatism, with sharper concern about the Democrat they said benefited. Breitbart cast the endorsement as support for a “far-left” candidate and a betrayal of the family’s conservative image. The Daily Wire focused on Paxton’s conditional debate opening as Talarico pressed him to appear. ZeroHedge portrayed the race as a GOP family feud.
