Updated Oct 22, 5:00pm ETPresident Emmanuel Macron said French authorities would ban some protests after riots, looting and arson followed weekend demonstrations. He said marches by recognised groups such as trade unions could go ahead, though officials could reroute them. The unrest began in mid-September with students protesting teacher shortages, crowded or underfunded schools and poor facilities, then widened to public workers and cost-of-living protesters. The government said limits were needed to reduce renewed violence and protect city centres. Macron blamed the worst violence on seditious far-left groups and looters. Student groups said they would keep mobilising. Further demonstrations were planned for Saturday, with a larger security operation being prepared.
Left and right
From the left
Left-leaning outlets framed protest limits as a public-order response that also raised civil-liberties risks. In The Guardian, Emmanuel Macron cast the measures as necessary to protect city centres, businesses and public buildings, while the outlet warned that treating disparate protests as one uprising erased distinct grievances and made Europe look ungovernable. Los Angeles Times stressed that the bans prompted concerns over infringement of the right to protest, with a peaceful Paris gathering testing the rationale for restrictions.
From the right
Right-leaning outlets cast the unrest as radical disorder, not a fight over schools or prices.. The Federalist described a Marxist-Islamist alliance using student protest as cover for an anti-Western revolt.. It also argued Macron and mainstream media were hiding violent agitation behind softer protest language.. The Daily Wire framed the crisis as a result of mass immigration, failed assimilation and weakened national identity..
