What happened

President Donald Trump is campaigning in Sioux City, Iowa, with Republican Senate nominee Ashley Hinson to boost GOP candidates before the November 3 midterm elections. Iowa backed Trump by 13 percentage points in 2024, but Hinson now faces a close open-seat race against Democratic nominee Josh Turek. Democrats are also challenging Republicans in House and governor’s races, with control of Congress at stake. Hinson says she will work with Trump when it helps Iowa and push back when he is wrong, including on the Iran war. Turek welcomed the visit, saying Trump should see how tariffs, the war and healthcare cuts have hurt Iowa. Trump is expected back November 1.

How each side covered it

From the left

Left-leaning outlets framed the Iowa stop as a sign that Republicans are defending ground they usually count on easily. MS NOW led with Trump trying to lift farmers facing pressure from tariffs and rising prices. PBS NewsHour focused on Hinson’s effort to keep Trump loyalists while telling undecided voters she would challenge him for Iowa.

From the right

Right-leaning outlets emphasized Trump’s political drag and economic anxiety more than a simple turnout push. The New York Post centered on weakened standing and voter concern over his policies, including breaks with him over the Iran war. The Daily Signal highlighted the Senate race as an outside-money fight driven by attacks on opponents.
