What happened

Federal prosecutors charged former FBI officials Nikki Floris and Bradley Benavides with one count each of making false statements to Congress. The charges came by criminal complaint, not a grand-jury indictment, and concern their 2023 House Judiciary Committee testimony about FBI work involving Hunter Biden. Floris led the FBI’s Foreign Influence Task Force from 2019 to 2022, while Benavides was a section chief there through the 2020 election. The laptop became a political flashpoint after material said to come from Hunter Biden’s computer surfaced before that election. Prosecutors said records and witnesses contradicted the testimony. Floris’s lawyers denied the charge and called it politically motivated. Both defendants were released pending a Tuesday preliminary hearing.

How each side covered it

From the left

Left-leaning outlets framed the case as a politically charged prosecution, with its timing central to the story. The Guardian cast it as the latest high-profile investigative action arriving on the eve of an election. CNN centered prosecutors’ claim that the officials concealed task-force engagement and impeded congressional scrutiny. The New York Times linked the case to a wider push against law-enforcement and intelligence personnel.

From the right

Right-leaning outlets framed the case as accountability for officials accused of misleading Congress, while stressing a deeper FBI scandal. Fox News highlighted Jeanine Pirro’s warning that senior agents should face the “hammer of justice” when they lie. The New York Post treated the case as proof the laptop story was covered up by FBI officials. Daily Mail focused on the election timing and its political weight.
