What happened

President Donald Trump demanded Rep. Ilhan Omar resign, claiming she used a fake name to enter Congress. Omar remains in office, and Trump has no authority to remove her from her House seat. Federal agents searched Omar’s Washington home on Oct. 12 under a warrant in a criminal investigation into possible fraud in her family’s immigration paperwork. Omar, who came from Somalia as a child in 1995 and became a U.S. citizen in 2000, has denied wrongdoing. Investigators are examining whether false details appeared in immigration documents; earlier federal reviewers closed a 2019 review for insufficient evidence. U.S. Attorney Jeanine Pirro said another name in a court filing was Omar’s real name; Omar’s office called that false. No charges have been announced.

How each side covered it

From the left

Left-leaning outlets cast Trump’s demand as an escalation of a political campaign against a Black, Muslim critic, not a neutral fraud inquiry. MS NOW framed the probe as abuse of power and said Republican leaders should defend Omar’s rights as a lawmaker. Al Jazeera stressed that the unexplained name did not prove fraud or justify forcing Omar from Congress.

From the right

Right-leaning outlets treated the disputed name as the center of a possible identity and immigration fraud scandal, emphasizing consequences for Omar’s citizenship and seat. Fox News framed Omar as deflecting valid scrutiny through persecution claims while allies shielded her from accountability. The New York Post lingered on family-name matches, a reported marriage certificate and her father’s background as reasons suspicions persist.
