What happened

The White House narrowed its 50% tariffs on Canadian goods by exempting some imports used by farmers and growers. The exemptions cover products including packaging, refrigeration equipment and machinery. The change follows a tariff fight that began after U.S.-Canada trade talks collapsed, with Canada retaliating against U.S. goods. It also comes as Republican Senator Susan Collins faces Democrat Troy Jackson in a close Maine race where prices are an issue. The White House said the changes answer Canadian discrimination and protect American workers. Collins said Maine producers need Canadian supplies they cannot replace cheaply. Jackson said Collins enabled policies that raised costs. The administration also added certain valves, carpets and waste products. The changes take effect October 30.

How the left told it

Left-leaning outlets framed the move as targeted political relief for vulnerable Republicans, while stressing that it did not end the wider tariff burden. The Guardian led with the idea that Trump was trying to help Collins in Maine. The New York Times cited Collins saying farmers rely on Canadian goods unavailable from U.S. suppliers, while noting new duties on other products.

How the right told it

Right-leaning outlets treated the relief as a boost for Collins, with emphasis on her push to soften damage to Maine industries. Just the News highlighted Collins’s requests for tariff relief affecting businesses and consumers, while citing the Wall Street Journal on Trump’s effort to help her reelection bid. Epoch Times focused on Canada’s readiness to wait for a deal that meets its interests.
