What happened

Aleksandar Vučić blamed European countries and the “American deep state” for his election defeat without providing evidence. His claim came after he conceded defeat to the student-backed Student List, which won about 140 seats in Serbia’s 250-seat parliament. His Serbian Progressive Party-led coalition took roughly 103 seats, ending his party’s dominance after about 14 years. The student-led movement grew from protests after a Novi Sad railway-station canopy collapsed in November 2024, killing 16 people. Protesters blamed corruption and negligence, then built a broader campaign against cronyism and democratic backsliding. Supporters celebrated in Belgrade and pulled down barriers near parliament. The Student List must now form a government.

How the left told it

Left-leaning outlets framed the result as a student-led democratic breakthrough that now faces the harder task of governing. The Guardian stressed that a leaderless youth movement defeated an entrenched system, while noting its unclear path to power. The Los Angeles Times linked the victory to wider grassroots challenges against entrenched leaders.

How the right told it

Right-leaning outlets led with public anger becoming a broad repudiation, then focused on foreign-influence claims and geopolitics. The Washington Times emphasized that the protest movement had grown beyond students. Breitbart highlighted Vučić’s claim of a foreign-backed operation and his vow to fight back. The Washington Examiner stressed the awkward position for Washington.
