What happened

Serbia’s victorious student movement faces governing challenges as it prepares to take power. After Aleksandar Vučić conceded, protesters entered the pro-government Informer TV newsroom and called for its editor’s arrest. The leaderless Student List grew from student-led protests and is expected to hold about 140 of parliament’s 250 seats. Its win ended 14 years of dominance by Vučić’s Serbian Progressive Party. The movement arose after a railway-station canopy collapse killed 16 people, with protesters blaming corruption and weak accountability under Vučić. Vučić alleged foreign backing and vowed a comeback, while leading candidate Ilija Srdanović urged calm. A government may take weeks to form.

How the left told it

Left-leaning outlets framed the result as a democratic break with entrenched rule, stressing the fall of an authoritarian government. PBS NewsHour led on a historic student-led ouster of Serbia’s right-wing ruler. The Guardian lingered on violence and intimidation, saying police failed to stop attacks on protesters. Raw Story tied the defeat to stalled hopes for Trump-linked development profits in Serbia.

How the right told it

Right-leaning outlets framed the win as an uncertain anti-establishment handoff, stressing the movement’s unclear ideology and outside-power claims. Fox News cited observers who warned that vague Student List policies raised concern about Serbia’s future. Breitbart News emphasized Vučić’s claim that a “deep state”-backed movement helped defeat him. Washington Examiner focused on awkward fallout for Washington after Vučić cultivated Trump’s circle.
