Scott BessentUnited States Secretary of the Treasury then visited a Washington Cheesecake Factory, praised the meal and criticized Obama’s presidential center as resembling Darth Vader’s tomb. Obama had mocked the gold-heavy decor at Democratic rallies in Ohio, saying it looked like Saddam Hussein opened a Cheesecake Factory. The exchange came late in the midterm campaign, as both men campaigned with control of Congress at stake. Trump called Obama unintelligent and a lousy president. He said the work was needed because the White House was dirty, damaged and should symbolize America. Election Day is still ahead.
How the left told it
Left-leaning outlets cast the episode as Trump turning a decor joke into a revealing grievance, not a debate over upkeep. The New York Times framed Obama as having struck a nerve with Trump. New York Magazine emphasized allies trying to turn the joke into an elitism fight. MS NOW linked the renovation focus to misplaced priorities.
How the right told it
Right-leaning outlets treated the clash as a defense of renovation work and a chance to question Obama’s taste. The Daily Mail emphasized Trump’s claim that Obama failed to notice deterioration. The New York Post lingered on the length of Trump’s counterattack. Breitbart News presented the Cheesecake Factory jab as exposing Obama’s elitism.
