The New York Times reported that federal investigators found some evidence in 2016 that Ilhan Omar’s 2009 marriage was fraudulent. The FBI and Department of Homeland Security examined her marriage to Ahmed Nur Said Elmi during the Obama administration. Prosecutors let the case stall after concluding any felony was outside the five-year statute of limitations. The allegation is that Omar married Elmi, a British citizen suspected of being her brother, to help him get a green card; Omar denies he is her brother and calls the claim conspiratorial. The current inquiry also examines family immigration paperwork, including her citizenship age. Omar called it political targeting. Agents searched her Washington home on Oct. 12 and seized devices.

How the left told it

Left-leaning outlets treated the report as a credibility shift for old allegations while stressing the revived probe’s political setting. The New York Times paired officials’ account of a time-barred case with its view that Trump officials had revived scrutiny of a long-reviled lawmaker.

How the right told it

Right-leaning outlets presented the report as vindication of suspicions Omar and media allies had dismissed as conspiratorial. Fox News argued the Obama-era origins undercut persecution claims and made Obama’s criticism look hypocritical. Breitbart News cast the stalled case as an escape through “a technicality,” rather than exoneration.
