Vice President JD Vance initially deflected a young voter’s affordability question with a joke about Sen. Jon Husted’s backside. Vance drew criticism for the response after Kate White, a Texas Christian University senior, asked how young people could afford homes and families. At the Fox News town hall in Fort Worth, White cited an average home price above $415,000. The joke referred to President Donald Trump’s repeated public praise of Husted’s physique, especially his backside. Trump said the remarks lifted Husted’s poll standing by 12 points, but he cited no polling. Vance later blamed housing costs partly on the arrival of 20 million undocumented immigrants. He acknowledged Republicans often neglect young people’s affordability problems, and he offered no specific housing-cost plan.

How the left told it

Left-leaning outlets framed the exchange as a revealing lapse, stressing Vance’s choice to join Trump’s body-focused humor instead of treating the moment as inappropriate. HuffPost lingered on Trump’s “obsessing over men” line of critique. MS NOW cast the joke as dismissive of a sincere affordability concern. New Republic tied the episode to doubts about Vance’s 2028 viability.

How the right told it
