U.S. Magistrate Judge Zia Faruqui dismissed the criminal complaint against two former FBI officials accused of lying to Congress about the Hunter Biden investigation. He found that prosecutors had not shown probable cause that Nikki Floris and Bradley Benavides committed a crime. The complaint accused them of lying in 2023 about their knowledge of FBI work tied to Hunter Biden’s laptop and the bureau’s Foreign Influence Task Force. The case grew from Republican claims that the task force suppressed information harmful to the Biden family before 2020. The Justice Department disagreed and said it was evaluating options. Prosecutors may still appeal or seek a grand jury indictment.

How the left told it

Left-leaning outlets cast the ruling as a check on a thin, hurried case that skipped basic safeguards. The New York Times emphasized prosecutors’ effort to avoid “fundamental checks and balances”. HuffPost framed the dismissal as an “unmistakable setback” for Trump’s Justice Department, while noting prosecutors could still try again.

How the right told it

Right-leaning outlets split between casting the dismissal as a rebuke of politically driven Trump-era prosecution tactics and as protection for former FBI officials. Fox News framed Faruqui’s ruling as a rebuke to a weaponized Justice Department. The Gateway Pundit portrayed Faruqui as a biased activist judge shielding former FBI officials from accountability in the Hunter Biden laptop affair.
