South Korea’s KASA released before-and-after images from the Danuri lunar orbiter showing a new crater where a stray SpaceX Falcon 9 upper stage hit the Moon on Aug. 5. The school-bus-size, 4-metric-ton rocket body, launched in January 2025 with lunar landers for U.S. and Japanese companies, struck near Einstein crater at about 5,400 mph (8,700 kph) after drifting off course. A Chile-based telescope observed the debris plume, and ESO’s Very Large Telescope recorded sodium and lithium spectral lines in the dust.
