Indonesia suspended operations at eight airports on Sunday after Anak Krakatau erupted and volcanic ash entered airspace, canceling all flights at Jakarta’s Soekarno-Hatta International Airport. The disruption canceled 1,558 flights and affected about 170,000 passengers across western Indonesia. Anak Krakatau, a volcanic island in the Sunda Strait between Java and Sumatra, had shown signs of activity since Friday before the eruption. No casualties were reported, no evacuation orders were issued, and some school activities and fishing were halted near affected areas.
