The reporting
Former NBA players Enes Kanter Freedom and Royce White are not eligible for the WNBA draft, a person familiar with the decision said Monday. Both had declared plans to enter the draft and said they identify as transgender. The league has not publicly explained the eligibility decision; an anonymous WNBA source said it would not “give oxygen” to efforts meant to mock the league or marginalize others. Freedom attended a Chicago Sky game Sunday and was reported to have been ejected.
Analysis & opinion
Trans eligibility contradictionMostly Right
The WNBA’s refusal to allow Enes Kanter Freedom and Royce White to play shows that eligibility for the women’s league ultimately depends on biological sex. If the league says it supports transgender inclusion while excluding biological men who identify as women, it is applying an inconsistent standard.
