Meta AI Deepfake Tool
Meta disabled an Instagram feature that let users make AI images of public accounts after backlash.
Summary
Meta said Friday it has made unavailable an Instagram feature in its new Muse Image AI tool that let people generate images using photos from public Instagram accounts. The feature, released Tuesday inside Meta AI, worked by @-mentioning a public account and was enabled by default for public Instagram users. Meta said it “missed the mark” after backlash over privacy and consent, including objections from SAG-AFTRA and CAA. Muse Image is part of Meta’s new Muse Spark model family from Meta Superintelligence Labs.
Coverage Angles
Backlash Forced Retreat
Mostly CenterMeta pulled the feature because users and critics quickly exposed how unsafe it was. The reversal shows the company rushed a risky AI tool into Instagram and had to back down.
Deepfake Consent Crisis
BalancedMeta gave people a way to turn Instagram photos into AI deepfakes without meaningful consent. An opt-out after launch was inadequate because public accounts could be used before users understood the risk.
