Owners of Apple's newly launched iPhone Duo have reported inner-screen cracks and display failures. Apple said the problem affects a “small number” of units and told affected customers to contact AppleCare for replacements. The Duo is Apple’s first foldable phone, with a roughly $2,000 price and an inner display that bends at the hinge. Foldable screens have long posed durability problems, including early Samsung models that cracked during ordinary use. Some Duo owners described bright lines near the hinge or a crunch as the phone opened. iFixit suggested a hinge support bar may stress the screen, while CNET said its test unit passed more than 55,000 folds. The cause and scale remain unclear. Out-of-warranty inner-screen replacement reportedly costs $999.

Left and right

From the left

Left-leaning outlets cast the failures as an early durability warning for Apple’s expensive first foldable, while noting the record is still too thin to prove a wider defect. The Guardian treated the cracks as a setback for an expensive debut, and experts it cited said there were too few examples to determine a more serious problem. Wired emphasized the engineering strain built into foldables and the repair difficulty of a bending screen.

From the right

Right-leaning outlets cast the launch as a hype-driven shortage story with visible breakage risks. ZeroHedge linked the frenzy to scarce inventory, resale premiums, and buyers unwilling to wait, then said the initial sellout showed early demand without proving momentum would last. Reports of phones breaking within hours pushed the critique toward durability.
