The reporting
Hurricane Lowell neared Hawaii on Monday, putting Kauaʻi and Niʻihau under hurricane warnings and Oahu under a tropical storm warning as the storm was expected to pass west of the two western islands late Monday into early Tuesday. Gov. Josh Green closed schools and government offices on Kauaʻi and Niʻihau for Tuesday. Forecasts called for as much as 16 inches of rain, flash flooding, mudslides, damaging winds, dangerous surf and rip currents. The National Hurricane Center also warned that tornadoes were possible, especially near Kauaʻi and Niʻihau.
