What happened
After taking Mokha and Perim Island, Iran-backed Houthi rebels claimed new overnight missile and drone attacks on Saudi Arabia. Houthi military spokesperson Yahya Saree said the group hit Sharurah military base in the south, targeting weapons depots and command centers. Yemen’s Saudi-backed government, after acknowledging a “painful” defeat on the Red Sea coast, said it would send more forces there. The United Nations said nearly 86,000 people had fled Yemen, raising fears of wider war and shipping disruption.

Left-leaning coverage stressed Saudi Arabia’s bind: CNN said Riyadh has few options and does not want all-out war, though Houthi moves could pull it in. CNN also cited an expert saying large-scale Saudi retaliation is growing more likely. The Guardian focused on the claimed Saudi base attack and the UN displacement toll, while PBS NewsHour warned attacks on oil infrastructure and Red Sea shipping are pressuring global oil supplies and prices.
From the right
Right-leaning coverage framed the advance as an Iran-linked threat to trade and security. The New York Post said Yemen’s Saudi-backed government called its airstrikes a “battle for survival,” and said Houthi control of the shoreline threatens global oil trade. RedState called the push a significant escalation and said the rebels are still moving along the Bab el-Mandeb coast. The New York Post also highlighted fears of leverage over key straits.
